Take a diagnostic and classify the evidence
Attempt a representative practice test under realistic time conditions, using material from a reputable source. Record what you attempted, what you answered correctly and where you spent time without progress. A single score is only a starting observation.
Classify errors into concept gaps, misreading, calculation mistakes, poor question selection and time pressure. This matters because different errors require different interventions. Repeating large numbers of questions will not reliably solve a reading problem if you never analyse why you misunderstood the prompt.
Build a weekly plan you can sustain
Reserve separate time for concept learning, focused practice, mixed practice and review. A working candidate might use shorter weekday sessions and a longer weekend block; a full-time student may have a different pattern. Choose the arrangement you can maintain rather than an impressive schedule you will abandon.
Include buffer time for missed sessions and difficult topics. At the end of each week, identify one skill that improved and one recurring obstacle. Adjust the next week’s plan from this evidence. Avoid continually changing resources simply because a difficult practice set lowered your confidence.
Practise with a purpose
For a weak quantitative topic, learn the underlying method and then solve a small set while explaining each step. For reading, distinguish the author’s main argument from examples and qualifying statements. For reasoning sets, practise deciding whether a set is tractable before committing substantial time.
Write your own explanation of an error before reading the solution again. If you cannot explain why an attractive wrong answer is wrong, the learning may not yet transfer to a new question. Revisit selected mistakes after a delay to check retention.
Review mocks as decisions under time pressure
After a mock, review correct answers as well as mistakes. An answer obtained by a guess or an excessively long method may still reveal a weakness. Identify questions you should have left earlier and easier opportunities you missed.
Keep a compact error log with the question type, cause, correction and review date. Do not turn it into a collection of copied solutions. The goal is to change behaviour in the next test: read a condition carefully, abandon a stalled approach sooner or use a clearer representation.
Use official information for the exam itself
IIM Ahmedabad’s admissions page links to the official CAT website and current exam information. Use official candidate material for registration instructions, identity requirements and exam procedures. Preparation articles should not be treated as the final authority for administrative details.
When an official interface demonstration or mock is available, use it to understand navigation and instructions. Do not assume that any historical sample fixes the exact questions or timing of a future test. Keep your administrative checklist separate from your study tracker so neither gets overlooked.
Prepare for the wider admissions process
CAT preparation is one part of an MBA application. Research programme requirements, document needs and separate application processes while studying. Reserve time for reading about business and explaining your academic or professional work; these habits can also support later interview preparation.
Judge progress through several observations rather than one unusually high or low practice score. If performance stalls, change one element at a time and evaluate the effect. A sustainable process that improves accuracy and judgement is more useful than promises of a guaranteed percentile.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours should I study each day?
Use your diagnostic gaps and weekly availability to set a sustainable plan. Consistent practice and careful review matter more than copying someone else’s daily hour target.
Should I take a mock every day?
Only if you can review it properly and the workload supports learning. More tests without analysis can repeat the same mistakes.
Where should I verify dates and exam instructions?
Use the current official CAT candidate information and official institutional links. This guide deliberately does not publish unverified future dates.
