Identify the cohort and programme
Check the programme name, campus, graduating year and population covered. An institution may offer several management programmes with different entry profiles and recruitment processes. Results for one should not be silently transferred to another.
Record batch size, the number seeking placement and the number placed where these are reported. Ask how sponsored students, entrepreneurs, students returning to employers and those opting out are treated. A percentage without a clear denominator leaves important questions unanswered.
Distinguish offers from people
One learner may receive more than one offer, so the number of offers need not equal the number of students placed. Similarly, a count of participating recruiters does not show how many learners joined each employer or what work they were hired to do.
Look for role and sector distributions as well as totals. A programme with many offers in one function may be less relevant if you want a different function. Treat a logo as a prompt for further questions, not proof of access to a particular career.
Read compensation definitions
Compare like with like. Cost-to-company can contain components beyond fixed cash pay. A reported figure may include variable compensation, joining incentives or other benefits. Domestic and international outcomes may use different currencies and contexts.
Check whether the report explains the components and treatment of outliers. Ask for fixed compensation information where available. Do not divide a headline annual package by twelve and assume it represents monthly take-home pay; tax, deductions and compensation structure can change that calculation.
Use median and distribution thoughtfully
The average is sensitive to unusually high or low values. The median describes the middle observation in an ordered set, but it still does not show the full distribution or guarantee what any individual will receive. Both need context.
An original illustration: for five hypothetical annual figures of ₹5, ₹6, ₹7, ₹8 and ₹24 lakh, the mean is ₹10 lakh and the median is ₹7 lakh. Neither number is false, but they tell different stories. This fictional example explains arithmetic, not the outcome of any actual institution.
Look for reporting discipline
IIM Ahmedabad’s Indian Placement Reporting Standards initiative aims to standardise business-school placement reporting. A clearly defined and independently reviewed report can be more useful than promotional highlights because readers can see the basis of comparison.
Even then, read the scope and notes. An audit of reported data does not predict future demand or your individual outcome. Check whether figures are final, which reporting period they cover and whether any groups or compensation components are excluded.
Connect the report to your profile
Compare your background with the cohort’s experience, academic mix and career interests where available. Ask career services how learners targeting your preferred roles are supported and what eligibility restrictions apply. Consider the work needed beyond the programme: projects, applications, networking and interviews.
Use several years of comparable reports if available, but do not assume a trend will continue. Combine outcome evidence with curriculum, learning support and total cost. Your decision should remain sensible under uncertainty rather than depending on matching a headline salary.
Frequently asked questions
Is the highest package useful?
It shows an extreme outcome, not a typical one. Read median, distribution, role mix and compensation definitions alongside it.
Does 100% placement mean everyone in the batch got a job?
Check the stated denominator and participation rules. The claim may refer to a defined group of students seeking placement.
Can I compare online and campus outcomes directly?
Only when programme, population, career-service access and reporting definitions are sufficiently comparable. Do not transfer one cohort’s figures to another.
